Getting into medical school is one of the most competitive admissions processes in UK higher education. With the right preparation, the right advice, and a clear understanding of what individual medical schools are looking for, your application to study medicine can stand out from the field.
What Does a Medicine Application Involve?
All applications to study medicine at UK universities are submitted via the UCAS website, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service.
Your UCAS medicine application allows you to choose up to four medical schools, and every element of it matters: your qualifications, your UCAT score, your personal statement, and your references all contribute to whether admissions teams invite you to interview.
The UCAS application deadline for medicine is 15 October, this applies to all applicants, including UK students and international students. Missing this closing date means waiting an entire year to reapply, so preparation well in advance is essential.
Entry Requirements for Medicine Courses
Entry requirements vary between individual medical schools, but most UK universities require A-levels or equivalent qualifications in Chemistry and Biology, or Chemistry and one other science. For international applicants, equivalent qualifications such as the IB, AP, or national Baccalauréat are widely accepted, though you should check each university's specific requirements carefully.
Graduate entry medicine is also available at a small number of universities for applicants who already hold a degree. Graduate entry programmes are typically shorter and highly competitive, with their own separate entry requirements and UCAS deadlines.
Sitting the UCAT
From 2025 onwards, all medicine courses in the UK exclusively use the UCAT — the University Clinical Aptitude Test — as part of their admissions process. The UCAT tests verbal reasoning, decision making, quantitative reasoning, and situational judgement, and is sat online at an approved test centre. You can register and book via the UCAT website.
Your UCAT score is a significant part of your application. Medical schools use it to shortlist applicants for interview, and score thresholds differ between universities.
Sitting the UCAT well requires structured preparation, our consultants provide tailored tuition to help you perform at your best on test day.
Getting Work Experience
Work experience is a key part of any medicine application. Medical schools want to see that you have genuine experience in a caring role and have reflected meaningfully on what it involves to become a doctor.
This means getting work experience across a range of settings, GP surgeries, hospitals, hospices, and community care, and being able to articulate what those experiences taught you.
We provide detailed and tailored work experience advice to help you identify and secure relevant placements, and guidance on how to write about those experiences effectively in your personal statement and at interview.
Writing Your Personal Statement
Your medicine personal statement is one of the most important parts of your UCAS application. From the 2026 entry cycle, UCAS has introduced a new personal statement format: applicants must now answer three structured questions covering motivation to study the course, preparedness, and relevant experiences. The total length remains 4,000 characters, around 650 words.
This change means students need to supply a precise and compelling account of their academic and non-academic experiences to convincingly demonstrate their suitability for a medicine course. Wider reading remains essential to showing genuine enthusiasm and preparedness.
Our consultants will help you craft a medicine personal statement that is clear, specific, and compelling, giving admissions teams exactly what they need to see.
The Admissions Process: What to Expect
Once you submit your application through UCAS, medical schools will review your qualifications, UCAT score, and personal statement to decide whether to invite you to interview.
Most UK medical schools use Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs), which assess communication, ethical reasoning, empathy, and situational judgement. A small number of universities use panel interviews.
Making sure your application is strong at every stage, before and after you apply through UCAS, is what separates successful applicants from those who miss out.
