There are two types of Engineering degrees offered at UK universities: BEng (Bachelor of Engineering) and MEng (Master in Engineering). A BEng is a standard three-year degree in Engineering, and those who complete this have the appropriate training and experience to apply to become an Incorporated Engineer. 

For those wishing to become a Chartered Engineer, its mandatory to follow degree studies with advanced study equivalent to the final year of an MEng programme. 

While the majority of degrees focus on a particular discipline, there are some General Engineering courses that allow for specialisms at a later date. 

Universities in the UK offer courses in the following areas: General Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace, Naval Architecture, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Production and Manufacturing, Chemical, Process and Energy, Metallurgy, Materials Science, Ceramics and Glass, Polymers and Textiles, Maritime Technology and Biotechnology.

The ESAT is a new test for 2025 entry onwards and will be required by students applying for a number of different programmes including some Engineering courses at Oxford and Imperial.
