Your Step-by-Step Medical School Application Guide
The UK medical school application is a two-year journey, and knowing what to focus on at each stage is half the battle.
Below, we've broken the process down year by year, from your first volunteering shifts and UCAT registration through to confirming your place on a medicine course and preparing for life in the UK.
Use this as your roadmap and revisit it regularly as deadlines approach.
What Is the UCAT and What Score Do You Need?
The UCAT, formally known as the University Clinical Aptitude Test, is a key part of the UK medical application process.
The revised 2025 format covers four sections: Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, and the Situational Judgement Test. Each section is scored between 300 and 900, with a maximum total of 2700.
A score of 2050–2110 places you in the top 10–20% of applicants and is effectively a necessity for international students applying to competitive UK medical schools.
Achieving SJT Band 1 or 2 is strongly preferred by most admissions teams.
UK Year 12 / 11th Grade / Second Last Year of School
Autumn - December
Work towards the best grades you can in Chemistry and Biology - whether that's at A Level, IB HL, AP, Baccalauréat spécialités or your country's equivalent. Begin volunteering in care settings such as hospices or local charities and keep a reflection journal to help remember what you learn about resilience and teamwork. Medical work experience starts here, and the earlier you begin, the stronger your application will be.
January - April
Start your research into UK medical schools, paying close attention to entry requirements, tuition fees, and the limited places for international student places. Familiarise yourself with the updated UCAT 2025 format, which has removed Abstract Reasoning and set a maximum score of 2700 instead of the previous 3600, and begin practising. Understanding how medical schools use UCAT scores to shortlist applicants will help you set a realistic target early.
May - July
Register for the UCAT when bookings open in May and increase your preparation, particularly for Decision Making, which is expanded in the 2025 version. Organise and commit to experience in primary, secondary and tertiary care. Every hour of medical work experience adds depth to your application, so secure as much as you can!
July - September
Make the most of all of your work experience by keeping a daily journal of your activities. Take the UCAT during this time. A score above 2000 is competitive and you should aim for Situational Judgement Test Band 1 or 2. Once you have your result, carefully select your four medical school choices, as entry score cut-offs differ between universities. We strongly advise seeking expert advice from your medical applications consultant at this time, as navigating UCAT scores is complex and nuanced, and expert guidance can make a real difference to your chances of securing a place at medical school.
UK Year 13 / 12th Grade / Final Year of School
September - October
Finalise your personal statement, making sure to detail your motivation and thoughtful reflection on your experiences. You will also need strong teacher references that showcase your academic and personal qualities. Submit your UCAS application by the 15 October deadline. Missing this deadline means missing the cycle entirely, so build in time for final checks.
November - February
Prepare for interviews, which are usually in the form of Multiple Mini Interviews. Practise ethical questions, communication stations, and answering "Why medicine?" Use your journal to provide real examples from your previous experiences.
March - April
Attend interviews and await offers or rejections. Use this time to revisit your second-choice programmes and ensure your application documents are fully in order.
May - August
Confirm your place once final results are released. Organise your visa, accommodation, and finances for your move to the UK. The registration process for your student visa can take several weeks, so begin this as soon as your place is confirmed.
