How To Improve Your Chances At Oxbridge

Every year, families ask us the same question in different ways: is there anything a student can actually do to improve their chances at Oxford or Cambridge, beyond simply having strong grades? The answer is yes, and it's more within a student's control than most people might think.

At William Clarence, our educational consultants work with Oxbridge applicants throughout the year, and the pattern we see is the students who improve their odds most are making smarter decisions earlier in the process.

Where does the biggest improvement come from?

Subject choice. Both universities publish data showing that success rates vary considerably from course to course, far more than they vary between the two universities themselves. A well-matched, carefully chosen course can put a student in a much stronger position than an ambitious but poorly suited one, even with identical grades.

This is not about choosing an "easier" subject for its own sake. It's about applying for the course that best fits a student's interests and academic strengths, because that alignment tends to produce a stronger application at every stage, from the personal statement through to the interview. Our Oxbridge applications experts spend lots of time on this early in the process, because it shapes everything that follows.

Does the college you apply to matter as much as people think?

Both Oxford and Cambridge run pooling systems specifically designed to stop strong candidates being turned away simply for applying to a popular college. Oxford has confirmed that around a third of successful candidates end up at a college they didn't originally choose, and Cambridge operates an equivalent system across the year.

That said, college choice still matters, just not in the way most applicants think. Faculty strength in the chosen subject, college size, location, and ethos all vary considerably across Oxford and Cambridge, and a college that suits one student well might suit another far less.

This is exactly where our Oxbridge applications experts help. We work with students on the full picture, including faculty reputation and overall suitability, so the college they apply to is one they'd thrive at.

What else matters?

Preparation, and specifically the kind that starts early. Interview and admissions test readiness, wider reading, and a personal statement that reflects engagement with a subject all make a measurable difference, and all of them improve with time and proper guidance rather than last-minute effort. This is particularly true of the admissions tests, where we ensure proper time is dedicated to preparation, tuition and mocks.

These areas are where our Oxbridge experts spend most of their time with students. We build familiarity with a subject well before the personal statement is written, and prepare for interviews in a way that builds confidence instead of rehearsed answers. The same applies to medicine applicants working with our medical applications specialists, where subject fit and early preparation matter equally as much.
