Record UK university application numbers in 2026
The current 2026 UK university application cycle is the most competitive on record. At William Clarence we’re keeping a close eye on what that means for our applicants.
We have looked closely at the data from UCAS - the University and Colleges Admissions Service - and there is a very clear upward trajectory in demand. By the January 2026 deadline, the total number of applicants had reached 619,360 - 3.1% more than in 2025.
Where has this increase come from? Firstly, there has been a boom in school-leavers applying from the UK, with their numbers making up over half of the total applicants and up by 4.8% from last year. This is likely due to the UK’s largest 18-year-old population in decades. But participation rates have remained the same, suggesting that competition is intensifying because there are more highly qualified candidates in the system.
International application numbers have also increased by 5.1% this year, continuing to put additional pressure on already highly selective universities. And October deadline courses - those at Oxford, Cambridge and for Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry - experienced record application numbers, increasing by 7.4% year-on-year. This gives top universities and degrees scope to be more selective than ever.
From our perspective, it’s evident that strong grades are no longer enough - more candidates achieve top marks and apply to the most competitive universities, which is making differentiation more important than ever. Evinced by changes to the personal statement implemented this year, universities are seeking more academic super-curriculars and more evidence of commitment from their prospective students.
This is where expert guidance makes an enormous difference - we’re here to help position students effectively within this increasingly crowded field, and to work with families to make sure applications aren’t just competitive but strategic.
